ACAPULCO

“ACAPULCO” is a reinterpretation of a classic chandelier. As such, it provides both, direct and indirect light for exclusive contemporary spaces. This is an assembly of four parts, each made of two vacuum-formed plastic sheets, mounted on a steel frame and illuminated by standard fluorescent tubes. The transparent top sheet allows the ceiling to be lit, whereas the translucent bottom sheet illuminates the space underneath.  Additionally, inlets of smoothed glass-pieces are distributed over the bottom surface, creating a floating field of glitters.

This is a competition entry for a new office building at Zurich Main station. It is part of the new Europaallee master plan by Kees Christiaanse.
The main masses of the building are organized around two central cores in a tetris-like arrangement. They thus create not only a sculptural building but also one of which no floor plan equals the other.
As a side effect, attractive outdoor spaces (two big loggias and a series of terraces) are created. They serve as recreational areas for the office spaces as well as for a restaurant, located on the 8th floor and open to the public.

Re: Contemplating the Void

BUBBLE IT UP! This installation aims to change the interior Guggenheim into a huge playground. A strong nylon net is hung from its balustrade and filled up with hundreds of redish-colored gym-balls. Also, by filtering and reflecting the light that penetrates through the museum’s skylight, the whole interior is “painted” in a red glow.

The laminated safety glass sheet comes in 12 different colors and its diamond-like shape makes it easy to walk around. The legs are made from bent steel tubes and are arranged in a double-Y shape to support the glass at four points. (Photograph © christian aeberhard fotografie)

“SPHING” is a sculpture designed for an invited competition: a concrete flower around which visitors and a series of functional elements organize. It is positioned upon a water surface in the center of a prison courtyard. Its three parts are each made of two halves, laminated together. All elements are made using the same mold.

In addition to the sculpture design, the competition brief leaves it to the participants to propose a design for the courtyard. In this proposal, the surface is inclined by 6 percent in order to connect the existent building and ground-floor in a way that allows for wheelchairs to easily move around. The so created ramp hosts a series of  ”floating” elements: a bench, the sculpture, a “garden” and a small roof. An incision into the ramp is necessary to allow for a fire engine to access the building.

BOOKSHELF-TABLE

“BOOKSHELF-TABLE” is a presentation and storage device for books and magazines. Designed for a publisher, it can be used for presentations in shops, galleries, or even at home. The asymmetrically shaped donut form provides variously exposed spots on its side as well as a display surface on top. The bookshelf-table is made out of a series of 12 mm, CNC-cut plywood panels, which are put together in a slotted waffle-construction method. It is a self-supporting structure, and is held together without any screws or nails. The bookshelf-table consists only of a repeated and varied primary structure; there is no hierarchy among the construction elements.

URBAN TOY

“URBAN TOY” is a seating structure conceived for cities to activate their public spaces. By providing locations for people to sit, talk, play, read, listen to music or just have a drink, it creates opportunities for playful, positive experiences around the city. Each Urban Toy is made of a single, seamless polyethylene-shell by rotomolding. The Toys come in all colors, are easy to clean, resist vandalism and can be moved easily by truck within the city, allowing for easy relocation from one event to the next.
